Dubcentral presents Jah Shaka Sound System, The Mighty Zulu Warrior in Session
‘SOME PEOPLE MIGHT DREAM MENTALLY, BUT I GET MY DREAMS THROUGH MY EARS’
(Jah Shaka 1984)
Jah Shaka is the originator, the inspiration for the all the other UK sound systems. He is one of the most important roots reggae and dub artists ever; composer, musician, singer, mixing engineer, producer, record label owner, and the operator of the heaviest roots/dub sound system in the world. Expect dubplate mayhem and a sound earthquake!
When Shaka built his sound in the early 1970’s he kicked off a mighty movement inspiring the likes of The Disciples, Iration Steppas, Jah Warrior, Channel One Sound System, Conscious Sounds and Aba shanti-I. At the same time, on his own record label, he was busy releasing music from Jamaican artists such as Max Romeo, Johnny Clarke, Bim Sherman and Prince Alla as well as UK groups such as Aswad and Dread & Fred. He has released a number of dub albums, often under the Commandments of Dub banner.
In 1980 Shaka played himself in the film Babylon (directed by Franco Rosso), operating his Sound System in a soundclash at the climax of the story. Later, in 1989 he visited Jamaica working with many musicians there, including King Tubby.
2010 and he is continuing to inspire new generations of lovers of dub. Whether playing in Japan, the USA or Europe, Shaka has stayed true to roots music and his Rastafarian beliefs steering clear of commercialised reggae and slack dancehall lyrics. As a result his appeal is global, bringing together all ages and all cultures in a spirit of unity.
Jah Shaka’s sound is the ultimate and Dubcentral is truly proud to finally bring the man and his sound to Sheffield.
