BUSH CHEMISTS FT. DOUGIE CONSCIOUS & KING GENERAL
FIRST TIME PLAYING IN SHEFFIELD!! Conscious Sounds is an Independent UK-dub / roots label & studio run by producer Dougie Conscious. Dougie started his career in music production with humble means while running Dub Shack Records at Camden lock market in 1988. It wasn’t long before Dougie began creating his own dub tracks; his first attempt at mixing was the instrumental ‘Stepping time’ recorded on 4-track at Nick Manasseh´s house – it was released in 1990 under the name Century and laid the foundations for the Conscious Sounds label.
Bush Chemists formed in the early 1990’s alongside the Century project with core members consisting of Dougie Conscious, Chazbo and Culture Freeman. Over the years Bush Chemists have worked with a variety of vocalists including Kenny Knots and King General.
King General started singing at sessions in London alongside various DJs including the early years of Conscious Sounds. He is known for having a sweet vocal tone; his main influence being drawn from the 80’s Reggae scene, which shine’s through in his unique mic style. King General has had countless releases, many of them with Conscious Sounds – together the killer combination of Dougie Conscious and King General have been all over world, tearing up every dancehall and festival that they set foot in.
It has to be said Dougie Conscious & Conscious Sounds has helped to pave a way for UK reggae and dub music across the globe, creating killer riddims time after time. Both Dougie and King General have built up an extensive back catalogue of tuff dub & roots releases, worked with a huge variety of vocalists, sound systems, musicians and have firmly established themselves as an integral part of today’s reggae scene.
Undoubtedly you will have heard of Kenny Knots through his work with a wide range of UK and European producers including Mungo’s Hi-Fi, Manasseh, Conscious Sounds / Bush Chemists, Cultural Warriors, Jah Warrior, O.B.F and many more. Kenny is one of the true veterans of the London sound system scene, being right in amongst it starting off as a teenager around 1983-84, running with Unity Sound System. He has performed alongside the likes of Mikey Murka, Selah Collins, Errol Bellot and many others in what now can be called a golden era, with big sounds like Coxsone, Saxon & Java. On the night, Kenny Knots will be performing in combination with Operation Sound System, bringing pure energy & good vibes to the dance.
We can honestly say that having Dougie Conscious, King General, Kenny Knots and Operation Sound System in one room, that this session is set to be a musical explosion!
OPERATION SOUND SYSTEM
Established in 1996 the ‘North West Heavyweight’ Operation Sound System is a custom built, hand crafted, reggae & dub sound system and record label based in the UK.
Having played alongside the biggest and best sound systems from up and down the country including Iration Steppas, Aba Shanti I & Channel one, Operation has come to be known as one of the most respected systems on the scene. They were also very successful in the UK Unification Dub Cup only just losing out to the eventual winner King Earthquake. They are true UK Roots pioneers.
Alongside the Sound System, Nick Sasquash runs the Operation Records label. The OSSR label, (established in 1997) releases conscious, heavyweight roots music for sound system and since its first vinyl release 2004 the label has gone from strength to strength. The label has featured artists such as UK roots pioneer Ras Daddy Teacha, Prince Jamo, Hornsman Coyote, Bunnington Judah, Don Fe amongst others.
Dubcentral and Operation Sound System have a close relationship going back over two decades and it is always a pleasure to have them back in the Steel City.
The event coincides with forthcoming Operation Records release “Mount Zion Step” (OSSR10-005) which features the voice of the great Ricky Grant, production & flute from Spanish based dub master Don Fe, a dub cut mixed by Nick Sasquash & backing vocals from Sis Caro & Ras Bruno.
FATTA – DUBCENTRAL
Fatta (Universal Hi Fi) is a core member and corner stone of Dubcentral. Running with Dubcentral for over 10 years, Fatta has played alongside some of the UK’s top sound systems and UK reggae artists and consistently delivers a top draw selection of killer roots, dub & steppas. Universal Hi-Fi has been Dubcentral’s sound system for the last 10 years with Fatta at the controls. Many of the acts we’ve booked have played on the sound including Vibronics, Idren Natural , Young Warrior , Nucleus Roots, Disciples, Dub Dadda and more.
Fresh faces amongst the swing scene, it’s easy to forget that these two 90’s kids have been collaborating for barely a year, and yet have managed to stamp their bouncy, pumping sound in a host of major UK cities and festivals and have even played Berlin’s biggest Electro Swing night!
Previous tracks have fused swing with house, disco, latin and even drum & bass and “Do The Strand” marks their entrance to ghetto swing. These two love to dance and Jenova Collective DJ sets are full of energy, topped to the brim with party edits and dance floors fillers.
Releases with Billybong and Ragtime Records (forthcoming) are securing them an ever-growing online following, with their free tracks (available on soundcloud) clocking up a significant number of plays and downloads. Most recently this dynamic duo have expanded The Jenova Collective into a 7 piece live band, combining their bass heavy production elements with live sounds of guitar, sax, drums, bass and vocals.
VENJA – FEEDBACK
Venja is a Sheffield drum and bass veteran with over 15 years’ experience under his belt, forging a strong and well-deserved reputation for skill and musicality. Venja is a resident at Sheffield Drum and Bass institution Feedback and has played alongside some of the biggest names in drum and bass including Calyx, Teebee, Black Sun Empire, Spectrasoul, Bryan Gee, Fierce, Raiden, Optical, Randall and many, many more. Venja has an infectious DJing style playing 1st class D&B, mixing up cutting edge with classics and never losing touch with the Old Skool.
CHRISTOPHER RAVE – ANALOGGINS
Featuring his roster of noise-making machines, this tweaking, squelching Sheffield resident will be testing your dancing shoes for sheer durability.
ARNIVORE – COOL BEANS
Founder of Cool Beans and numerous other side projects, Arnivore could be found DJing at Glastonbury, Boomtown Fair, Kendal Calling, Eden, Tramlines in 2013 as well as gigging in places as varied as the French Alps, the Scottish Islands and the party island of Ibiza. His sets feature a whole mishmash of ska, breaks, hip hop, drum & bass, reggae, swing, balkan and whatever else he can get his mitts on.
CHIV – BISON
If you need another reason for coming to this night (technically not that compelling a reason perhaps) then tune in to the slightly schizophrenic sound of DJ Chiv, who will be trying to surprise us on the night with his ODD choice of things he thinks he can mix together.
